Decade of dedication in quality healthcare & education

Ensuring affordable, quality healthcare for all is the goal of M. S. Ramaiah Memorial Hospital which has already set a benchmark in the healthcare sector in the country
By Shalet James
It is will power, hard work and perseverance that will make you a successful entrepreneur. Nothing in the world can stop you from realising your dreams if you have that fire in you. Late MS Ramaiah had the fire igniting in him and his hard work paid off. A number of institutions came up in a sprawling 85 acres of land at Mathikere in Bengaluru in his name. And these institutions have made remarkable contributions in the field of healthcare and medical educations.
A noted entrepreneur and philosopher, MS Ramaiah founded the Gokula Education Foundation (GEF) in 1962 to give brilliant students a platform to pursue higher education and become medical professionals of world standards. Over the time, M. S. Ramaiah Group under Gokula Education Foundation
established 17 educational institutions besides two medical institutes. Today, MS Ramaiah colleges and hospitals have become a benchmark in education and healthcare.
MS Ramaiah Hospital
With a mission to provide quality healthcare to all, especially weaker and neglected segments of society, MS Ramaiah Hospital was established in 1986. Situated in Mathikere, the 1,000-bed hospital has the state-of-the-art infrastructure with a full range of clinical specialities. “Our institutions mainly focus on two areas- healthcare and education. Both require integrity and ethics, and we are very particular about it. We have one of the largest dialysis units in South India and we also do transplants if necessary,” says Dr Naresh Shetty, President, MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital.
As a centre of National Blindness Control Programme, HIV/AIDS Control Programme, National TB Control Programme and National Immunisation Programme, MS Ramaiah Hospital has kept aside a huge amount of money to provide free and subsidised medical care to the needy and underprivileged patients. With staff and facilities available round-the-clock to ensure timely diagnosis, the hospital provides total care, which is the ‘mantra’ of the institution.
MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital
It is a NABH accredited multi super specialty hospital with 650 beds, catering to all patients. MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital is the new block of MS Ramaiah Hospital. MS Ramaiah Dental College, College of Pharmacy, Institute of Physiotherapy and College of Nursing have all been set up taking into account various needs of patients. With the NABL accredited laboratory, radio-diagnostics and a team of experts, the hospital is well equipped to provide advanced treatments. CT angiography, perfusion studies, virtual bronchoscopy/colonoscopy and 3D construction studies, magnetic resonance imaging for brain and spine, and musculoskeletal studies are the added advantages.
“The Institute of Neuro Sciences is doing some pioneering work which includes DBS for Parkinsons. We have a rehabilitation centre which may be the biggest in the country. We do paediatric rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation, orthopaedic rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation and also rehabilitation for pre and post pregnancy. Our hospital is divided into two segments- emergency patient care and regular patient care. We also have a disaster management group and we are the only medical college in the country which works along with the Disaster Management Group in Delhi,” says Dr Naresh Shetty.
“We are very keen to give people utmost healthcare. We conduct camps in several villages where our interns go and study the situation and we come out with the statistics. Our clinical Research Division conducts trials for new drugs and it is a FDA approved center. We have skill labs where students are trained in mannequins. About 3,000 people have come forward to donate their bodies to our cadaveric lab. Clinical and advanced researches are intensive here,” adds Dr Naresh Shetty.
The hospital promotes medical tourism and has patients from Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Nigeria, Yemen and Maldives. With a special interest in the overall health of people, the hospital conducts various healthcare programmes. Aayush programme is one among them which helps improve memory power. Every week, the hospital conducts awareness programmes on a particular disease. He says, “As lifestyle diseases increase, there is a need to educate people on the importance of healthy diet and exercise.”
The hospital’s future plans include a palliative care unit, Rehabilitation wards,Transplant unit, and also to perform more liver transplants and endoscopy surgeries.
